Acne in Adolescents Cause and Treatments

Acne in Adolescents affects over 17 million teenagers in the USA. Acne begins to spring up when hair follicles and the sebaceous gland get clogged up. It can take the form of whiteheads, blackheads, pimples and cyst.

As males go through puberty the body produces certain types of hormones. In males it is androgen or male sex hormones which are created in very high amounts. The Sebaceous gland gets over active producing Sebum in high proportions.

An oil called sebum travel to the top of your skin through your hair follicles. The skins cells will begin to block the follicles resulting in the development of Propionibacterium Acnes a skin bacteria. The skin begins to swell and now you have acne.

Blackheads are formed when these hair follicles are partially blocked and when they are fully blocked you get whiteheads. If these clogged follicles are not treated properly they will pop releasing bacteria and oil creating pimples.

Acne in adolescents is different for each individual and can be deep or shallow depending on the how much oil is produce and skin type.

Acne in adolescents can form in various ways. Not only can can adolescence get acne due to puberty but other factors are attributed for example drugs containing lithium, corticosteroids, and barbiturates. Acne problem can be elevated by excess oil and grease in the scalp, some cosmetics, and cooking oil. Some people can get sever acne due to hereditary. Acne in adolescents should not be squeezed or scrubbed to hard because it will make it worse.

The face, neck, chest, shoulders, and upper back are common places for acne to form. These areas of the body are places where there are high proportions of the sebaceous gland is present. The symptoms of ace in adolescence is different from person to to the other but the most common are:

  • Blackhead formation,
  • Painful lesions filled with pus
  • Nodules
  • Whiteheads

Some of these symptoms are the same as other skin conditions s if there is ever confusion, always consult a physician.

There are a ton of teenage acne treatments available. The main goal for any acne treatment for teenagers should be to reduce any scaring and have a much better appearance on the face.

  • Tretinoin helps in stopping the formation of new acne lesions
  • Antibiotics helps in stopping or slowing down the growth of the bacteria and also reduces inflammation

Antibiotic Drug therapy for acne in adolescents

  • Tetracycline
  • Doxycycline
  • Erythromycin

Severe acne treatment for teenagers may need take an oral drug called Isotretonoin which will shrink the sebaceous glands reducing oil production. About 90% of adolescences with acne have success with this oral treatment.

We do not recommend this drug and prefer a more holistic way of teenage acne treatment because this drug has some serious side effects. The importance of consulting your doctor first is absolutely recommended before use.
